Weekly Classes - in-studio and online.

A weekly class is a great way to progress your skills and incorporate a regular artistic endeavor into your life.

My classes are designed to develop your skills in a variety of subjects and mediums. Variety keeps it fresh and broadens our horizons. In my classes I also teach composition, lighting, spacial considerations, understanding the ‘mechanics’ of a moving subject, following the softness of human skin, creating lost edges, arranging the subject - all these are the backbone of your art. Tones, shades, shapes, relationships, are the structure of your art. The backbone and structure are in everything you create. They are the keys.

When you have the keys, you are ready to create beauty, with your ever-improving handiwork...

Different, Delicious and Refreshing!

Inspiring, Enthusiastic, Fun

Sessions last two and a half hours in which you will learn to observe in a new way, to draw what you see and really improve your painting skills. You have the choice of attending for a morning or evening session. Most sessions are in the studio, but we go out to draw on location once in the term, where possible, which is good fun. Previously we have drawn in Belfast City Hall, The Mac, The Ulster Museum and Folk Museum and Mount Stewart (which also happen to have good coffee shops for break time!).

My style of teaching is incredibly Positive. I recognises and celebrate the good points of every student's work, and develop paths for each individual to improve. Every student is different, and therefore every painting is different too. Your experience will be positive, uplifting and rewarding.

Informative, Excellent, Attentive

Disciplined, Happy, Supportive

Attending a weekly class, online: To participate in online classes and online workshops, students need internet access and a computer or tablet device. Students are supported with tutorial videos and constant feedback during the live class. Julie has taught hundreds of classes using Zoom (including week-long workshops and weekend workshops). They are incredibly popular with students and have proven an excellent teaching platform.

Enthusiastic inspiring instruction and encouragement. No gimmicks, no quick fixes - simply the Real Thing. Students are of mixed ability, classes are small and fully tutored. I provide the subject matter each week, and students bring their own materials. The atmosphere is warm and friendly - a delicious mix of intense and fun!

What do other people say…?

Paul Foxton, artist and teacher, taught a drawing symposium I organised in Belfast a few years ago. Here are some of his comments:

‘Getting together with artists is always really rewarding, but this was special. Special because Julie, drawing tutor and the organiser of the event is special; special because all the artists that gave workshops and presentations were special; special to me personally because it was the first time I’ve given a live workshop.

Julie put the whole thing together, her organisational skills are incredible. She is one of the warmest and most dynamic people you could hope to meet, and a wonderful teacher. She and I think so alike it’s scary. If you’re anywhere near Belfast and are looking for traditional drawing and painting tuition, I strongly recommend you get in touch with Julie.

I have been an art student with Julie for over 4 years after leaving art behind for 25 after school! Weekly class has become a must for me to feed my creative itch.

Julie’s art work is amazing and her skills as a teacher are second to none! I’ve done many art courses around the world and Julie has yet to be beaten in my opinion for her knowledge and teaching skill and clarity!!

Julie's art classes are the best I have ever been to. She is good humoured ,encouraging and specific in her teaching. No matter if you are a beginner or practiced student you will learn a lot. Julie is a teacher who loves to teach and her classes have really been a positive experience for me.

Julie is an exceptionally talented artist and teacher. I attended an art workshop given by her when I was younger and found her inspiring and instructive as a teacher. Recently she worked on a private commission for me, the result of which I was absolutely thrilled with. She is so talented at bringing subjects to life in her artwork and has such a creative, open-minded approach. I can't recommend her enough as an artist and teacher. Thank you Julie.

I went to a week long oil painting class here. Belfast is a wonderful location, the experience was fun and very educational. Julie, a very accomplished artist in her own right, is absolutely lovely, and facilitated the visiting teacher beautifully. Nothing was too much trouble. Several students were returners, which says alot.
